Food Security Launches Another Soil Enriching Project

Just like a community of microbes coming together to make vibrant soil, so does the community of non-profit organizations, businesses, and community members coming together to create systems that serve our agriculture and landscaping. Food Security Hawaii is excited and grateful to Maui County for their support in launching another project to scale efforts to supply natural soil enhancement products to farmers, landscapers and growers. Our partners include SoilThrive Hawaii, LLC, Marine Nui Marine Resource Council, Pacific Biodiesel, and Maui Gold Pineapple.

While the pilot project with Maui Gold continues for one growing cycle (funded in part by Maui County) and sponsored by Maui Nui Marine Resource Council and Food Security Hawaii, SoilThrive Hawaii plunges ahead with research, soil tests, and design of equipment so that Maui Gold can create a healthy and sustainable system for their pineapples and the soil.

With these efforts in process, SoilThrive will expand their operations to fulfill the local demand for biologically active compost and inoculants by creating systems and operations on site. The new center will be hosted by Pacific Biodiesel, next to their sunflower fields. The funds received from Maui County and other grants will facilitate the development of protocols and material resources for producing comprehensive compost, inoculants, and other products at scale to aid in the island-wide shift towards regenerative agriculture and horticulture. The center will establish research, systems, and products to enable small farmers to create foolproof biological amendments and compost. The center will share their open-source techniques through educational initiatives.
